DO YOU FEAR JUDGEMENT?

A common theme which comes up with my clients is that they are held back because they constantly feel and fear they are being judged.

I thought it would be useful to write a quick article looking at why the fear of judgement holds people back and what are some ways in which you can manage this?

The fear of judgment is a common human emotion that can hold people back from pursuing their goals and taking risks. People may fear being criticized or ridiculed by others, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and self-doubt.

This fear can be particularly intense in situations where people feel that they are being evaluated or judged, such as during a public speaking event, a job interview, or a social gathering. These are all examples that my clients have expressed fear in.

The good news is that there are ways to manage and work through this fear of judgement.

A few examples you can adopt are:

  • Reframe your thinking: Instead of focusing on what others may think of you, focus on the value of the activity or task you are doing. Remind yourself of why it is important to you and the positive impact it may have on your life.
  • Focus on the present moment: Instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on past mistakes, focus on the present moment. Pay attention to your surroundings, your breath, and the sensations in your body. When you worry about the future you create anxiety over events and issues that may most likely will never come true.
  • Practice self-compassion: Be kind and compassionate to YOURSELF. Recognize that making mistakes or facing rejection is a natural part of life and growth, and treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend. Stop beating yourself up over things.
  • Take small steps: If the fear of judgment feels overwhelming, start by taking small steps towards your goal. Break down the task or activity into smaller, manageable steps and focus on completing each one at a time. Focus on making small gains daily and you will see every day these will compound and grow.
  • Seek support: Talk to a trusted friend or family member about your fears. Having someone to listen and offer encouragement can help you feel more confident and motivated. Get a Coach who can help you understand and tackle all the blockers and limiting factors and map out a plan for your vision for the future.
  •  Use visualization techniques: Visualize yourself successfully completing the task or activity without fear of judgment. This can help build confidence and reduce anxiety.

Remember, the fear of judgment is a natural part of being human, and everyone experiences it to some degree. By practicing self-compassion, taking small steps, seeking support, and focusing on the present moment, you can learn to manage this fear and move forward with greater confidence and self-assurance.
